Andrew Walls, M.D.: Breast Pathology Expertise Grounded in Research and Leadership

Oculus Pathology pathologist Andrew Walls, M.D., combines fellowship-trained expertise in breast pathology with clinical leadership and a research background focused on complex diagnostic questions.

Dr. Walls joined Oculus Pathology in 2020 and primarily serves Baptist Medical Center. As a member of the Executive Committee, he also helps guide the practice’s clinical and organizational priorities.

Breast pathology often depends on careful distinctions among benign, atypical, in situ, and invasive disease. Dr. Walls brings focused training to the evaluation of breast specimens, supporting clear diagnoses and reports that give clinicians the information they need to determine next steps.

Dr. Walls completed a breast pathology fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston after completing his anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed his undergraduate education at Northern Illinois University.

Board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology since 2008, Dr. Walls has contributed to research spanning breast disease, diagnostic classification, and translational pathology. His published work includes a Journal of Clinical Oncology study examining long-term prognostic risk after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in relation to residual cancer burden and breast cancer subtype.

He also coauthored research on basaloid salivary gland-analogue tumors of the mammary gland, a rare tumor subtype, as well as earlier work examining hepatocyte and cholangiocyte transcription factors in human liver disease and embryonic development. Together, these publications reflect an approach grounded in detailed pathologic assessment and clinically relevant research.

Dr. Walls’s leadership extends beyond his primary service location through his medical directorship at the Texas Center for Infectious Disease. Across these roles, he contributes subspecialty knowledge, operational perspective, and a commitment to consistent diagnostic standards.
