Oculus Pathology’s Dr. Larry Cartmell, Jr., was recently featured by the McLennan County (Texas) Medical Society for his creative work in the community. A Waco, Texas–based, board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologist, Dr. Cartmell has been part of the Oculus Pathology team since 2019.
Outside of the pathology lab, Dr. Cartmell is an avid collector of concert posters, a passion he has cultivated since his time as an undergraduate at the University of Oklahoma when he saw the punk band Buzzcocks with The Cramps opening. That first poster led to today’s collection of more than 500 pieces, recently featured in an Art Center Waco exhibit, “If These Walls Could Talk.”
The McLennan County Medical Society’s feature of Dr. Cartmell’s passion project described the poster collection as spanning “genres from punk to psychedelic rock and includes posters from iconic venues like …. New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.” His collection includes original artwork from poster artists and events, including Willie Nelson’s Picnic, Janice Joplin, and ZZ Top.
In an interview with the Baylor Lariat, Dr. Cartmell described his collecting as “a creative counterweight – a way to stay connected to art, sound, and community alongside a demanding medical career.”
That mindset reflects what defines Oculus Pathology. Our physicians approach every patient case with curiosity, rigor, and precision – three characteristics Dr. Cartmell has cultivated inside the lab and in the collector’s studio.
Dr. Cartmell has held medical directorships for multiple pathology labs in Central Texas, including currently, Ascension Providence Health Center in Waco.
We congratulate Dr. Cartmell on the exhibit and invite you to learn more about the experienced, physician-led team behind Oculus Pathology’s comprehensive services.
