A hospital pathology service must be ready for whatever arrives on the next slide.
For nearly two decades, Jennifer Blankenship, M.D., has helped give Oculus Pathology that depth. A breast pathologist and hematopathologist, Dr. Blankenship brings expertise across two demanding areas of diagnostic medicine to her work at St. David’s Medical Center, in Austin, Texas, where she also serves as medical director.
Her role reflects a larger advantage of a subspecialty pathology practice: the physician reading a case is backed by colleagues with expertise across a wide range of disciplines. For hospitals and treating physicians, that creates a deeper bench for routine work, difficult cases, and the diagnoses that warrant another set of highly trained eyes.
Dr. Blankenship has been part of that bench since joining Oculus Pathology in 2007.
“Dr. Blankenship represents the kind of expertise we want behind every case,” said Matt Thompson, CEO of Oculus Pathology. “She brings significant subspecialty experience to her own work, and she is also part of a practice where physicians can draw on one another’s expertise. That combination is important when our hospital partners need answers they can act on.”
Dr. Blankenship is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and hematopathology. She completed fellowships in both surgical pathology and hematopathology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where she also completed her pathology residency and earned her medical degree.
That training gives her perspective across different types of pathology. Breast pathology requires careful evaluation of findings that can directly influence surgical and oncologic decisions. Hematopathology brings its own complexity, often requiring the integration of morphology with laboratory and clinical information to classify diseases of the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system.
Dr. Blankenship contributes to our collaborative model both at the microscope and through her leadership at St. David’s Medical Center. As the hospital lab’s medical director, she works within the day-to-day realities of a hospital pathology service, where diagnostic quality, communication, turnaround, and the needs of the clinical teams all converge.
Dr. Blankenship’s role as a Division Lab Stewardship Physician Champion for HCA reflects her commitment to advancing healthcare beyond the laboratory and into the broader hospital system. She provides physician leadership that brings together laboratory, medical, nursing, pharmacy, and administrative teams to improve the way diagnostic testing is utilized. By identifying opportunities to reduce unnecessary testing, standardize practices, eliminate inefficiencies, and promote evidence-based decision-making, she helps hospitals optimize resources while maintaining high-quality patient care. Her work demonstrates how physician-led, multidisciplinary collaboration can create sustainable improvements in operational efficiency, clinical quality, and value across healthcare organizations.
In 2024 and 2025, Dr. Blankenship was also named a Texas Super Doctors® honoree, a recognition published in Texas Monthly based on physician nominations and independent research by MSP Communications. The award reflects the peer recognition she has earned over a career spent largely serving physicians and patients in Central Texas.
“Jennifer is someone you want available when a case needs deeper review,” said Craig J. Peterson, M.D., secretary of the Oculus Pathology executive committee and fellow pathologist . “She brings a lot of experience to the table, but she’s also approachable and collaborative. You can always talk through a difficult case with her, and that makes a difference.”
For Oculus Pathology, Dr. Blankenship’s nearly two decades of service, dual subspecialty focus, and hospital leadership are assets for our clinical partners, giving them the access to the right expertise when they need it.
