Oculus Pathology dermatopathologists Susan Baer, M.D., and Mario Saab-Chalhoub, M.D., received “Volunteer Faculty Teacher of the Year” awards from their dermatology residents during their graduation ceremony held June 19. Dr. Baer is a second-time recipient, having been previously recognized in 2021.
The awards recognize Dr. Baer and Dr. Saab-Chalhoub for their contributions to resident education at a large public university and teaching hospital in Texas. Both physicians support resident training through lectures, case-based instruction, and collaborative reviews of deidentified cases encountered in clinical practice.
“This recognition reflects the commitment Dr. Baer and Dr. Saab-Chalhoub bring to resident education and to the continued advancement of dermatopathology,” said Matt Thompson, MHSM, FACHE, CEO of Oculus Pathology. “Their work as educators on the forefront of academic medicine also strengthens the knowledge, collaboration, and diagnostic expertise they bring to the dermatology practices and other clinical partners we serve.”
Oculus Pathology’s dermatopathologists contribute to a broad curriculum that includes inflammatory, neoplastic, infectious, and molecular dermatopathology. Through formal instruction and unknown slide conferences, residents work through complex diagnostic patterns, strengthen their differential diagnoses, and consider how pathology findings inform patient care.
The teaching awards were selected and presented by the residents, providing direct recognition of the physicians’ impact as educators.
Through teaching, our pathologists are engaged with the most current research, diagnostic methods, molecular techniques, and emerging standards within the field. That continued academic involvement informs the specialized interpretation and consultation Oculus Pathology provides to all its clinical partners.
Through clinical practice, collaboration, and resident education, the team continues to advance dermatopathology knowledge while supporting dermatologists with timely, clinically meaningful diagnostic insight.
