Pathologist Spotlight: Precision in Thyroid Care Starts Here: Meet Suzanne Ledet, M.D.

January’s Thyroid Awareness Month shines a spotlight on the diagnostic expertise that drives timely, accurate identification and care of thyroid disease. At Oculus Pathology, Suzanne Ledet, M.D. is at the center of that work.

A member of the Oculus Pathology team since 1998 and now Executive Committee member, Dr. Ledet is a regional leader in cytopathology and head and neck pathology, two specialties essential to evaluating thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. As Director of Cytopathology Services and laboratory medical director across multiple Ascension Seton hospitals, she helps ensure patients receive clear, reliable answers when they matter most.

“Thyroid cytology is about giving patients clarity — quickly and confidently,” said Dr. Ledet. “Accurate interpretation guides everything that follows. My role is to provide clinicians with the information they need to support appropriate treatment planning for their patients.”

Her training — began at Baylor College of Medicine and continued with a cytopathology fellowship — set the foundation for her decades of contributions to thyroid diagnostics. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) remains the gold standard for initial thyroid evaluation, and Dr. Ledet’s skill in this area elevates care for patients across Central Texas.

Her clinical interests also include placental pathology and transfusion medicine and blood management, reflecting her broad diagnostic expertise.

“Dr. Ledet’s consistency and precision have shaped Oculus Pathology’s reputation for excellence,” said Matt Thompson, CEO, Oculus Pathology. “Her leadership in cytopathology directly impacts patient care across the region, and our hospital and clinic partners know they can depend on her judgment.”

As Thyroid Awareness Month raises attention on early detection and proper diagnosis for thyroid conditions, Dr. Ledet’s work underscores the essential role of pathologists. Her commitment to accuracy, collaboration, and patient-centered diagnostics continues to set the bar for quality care at Oculus Pathology and beyond.
